Abstract

Yusuf Sakkoki's work Miftohu-l-ulum (The Key to Knowledge) encompasses essential knowledge in language and literature, covering topics such as phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, description, art, logic, poetry, rhyme, and aruz (a classical system of Arabic prosody). The book provides comprehensive explanations, ranging from the formation of letters and phonetics to word structure, sentence composition, and the appropriate use of language according to different contexts. It also discusses how to embellish sentences with artistic elements. The third main section of the work focuses on the science of rhetoric, encompassing semantic, artistic, and descriptive disciplines. In the study of semantics, it addresses topics such as declarative and imperative sentences, possessive and participle forms, the functional roles of verbs, and specific details related to omission, interconnection, reduction, extension, and limitation. This article specifically analyzes the chapter on ijaz (brevity), exploring its various types and styles.
