Abstract

The concept of discourse encompasses the role of language in communication, its significance in shaping knowledge, power, and meaning within society, and the methods employed to analyze it. The development of discourse theory not only illuminates the interconnections between language and communication and reveals their intricate links with social, cultural, and cognitive processes. This article examines the evolution of the concept of discourse and the analytical methods applied to it, particularly Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and pragmalinguistic approaches. While CDA investigates the relationship between language and power, exploring the social and political dimensions of discourse, the pragmalinguistic approach emphasizes the function of language within social contexts and speech acts. Overall, this article offers a deeper examination of discourse and provides new insights into its societal role.
