The article is devoted to the study of one of the current problems of modern linguistics, namely the role and place of historicism in the study of the functional aspect of language. It attempts to analyze existing points of view regarding the nature of existing problems and concepts on the issues of expanding and narrowing the functional aspect of various historical factors. According to many linguists, the anthropocentric paradigm has pushed aside the ethnogenetic direction in linguistics as an outdated direction where people no longer find anything new in the language of science. The article proves that this erroneous view arose as a result of the fact that the history of some European languages, such as English, German, French and Spanish, has been studied in great detail, and that there is nothing that can present a new view, fact or new aspect of linguistic units. But many issues related to the ethnogenetic direction have not yet been studied in other languages, and this is precisely what prevents linguists from understanding the real depth of the problem and the volume of questions that arise due to insufficient knowledge of the theoretical and practical foundations of this direction in other languages. This is explained by the fact that purely practical goals of studying languages, as it were, showed the meaninglessness of a deep study of the structure of the language being studied, i.e. the utilitarian approach led to a shift in values in the study of languages and peoples.
