Uzbek folklore, like the folklore of other cultures, features a variety of mythological characters. Among these are dragons and mythical creatures, including peri (fairies), chiltans (forty wise men), alwasti (witches), mortuv (kikimoras), and devs (ogres or giants with enormous heads). This article presents a brief analysis of the characters of peri and dev, which are considered “related” and believed to be created from pure, smokeless fire, as depicted in the dastans (epics) of the Gorogly episodes. These characters also appear in Uzbek fairy tales, myths, and legends. However, in larger epic works such as dastans, their traits are explored more comprehensively, making the study of their specific features particularly relevant.
