This article examines theoretical and practical aspects of complex syntactic constructions in the study of English syntax. Syntactic derivation — the process of forming complex sentences, including their structural mechanisms and semantic properties — has long attracted researchers’ attention. The author analyzes the views of prominent linguists (M.A.K. Halliday, Ch. Matthiessen, J. Miller, S. Greenbaum, M. Tallerman, N. Burton-Roberts, R. Jackendoff, A. Radford, B. Blake, B. Aarts, R. Carter, W. Croft, and others) in the study of complex syntactic constructions in English. The article argues that complex syntactic constructions should be considered not only as grammatical structures but also as communicative-pragmatic units. It systematically analyzes the integrative, functional, and derivational properties of the components that form complex sentences and highlights the distinction between parataxis (coordination) and hypotaxis (subordination).
