This article describes how the Qin and Han dynasties established the first centralized empire in Chinese history, laying the foundations for political governance and standardization. It also shows how, during the Han period, that administrative framework was enriched by philosophical and cultural systems—notably the elevation of Confucianism as state ideology—and by the development of new literary genres.
