Abstract

The article examines the research of ancient Sogd, the designation of the region in various sources and their representation in scientific research, the process of formation of Samarkand as a city, trade routes. As well as a number of assumptions and hypotheses about the etymology of the word Samarkand. Analysis of their discovery and role in the process of urbanization.
