Abstract

This article examines the agrarian policy implemented by the former Soviet government towards the Republic of Uzbekistan in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It highlights the contradictions in the reforms carried out under the leadership of N. S. Khrushchev. The effectiveness of the Virgin Lands campaign (Tselinny project) is critically evaluated, emphasizing that, as acknowledged by all historians, it was implemented through stringent state measures and forced labor. These efforts resulted in a sharp decrease in fertile lands. The article also notes the low standard of living among the peoples of Central Asia. An analysis of the measures implemented in Uzbekistan reveals that they led to further consolidation of cotton monoculture and exacerbation of environmental problems.
