Abstract

The contribution of linguistics to the theory and practice of translation is invaluable. However, translation encompasses far more than linguistic theory alone. Before focusing on semantics, translators were deeply engaged with terminology. For translators, the translation process is often defined as the ability to select the most appropriate term from the source text. Specialized dictionaries on terminology have been developed to aid this process. A significant portion of translators' scholarly work has been dedicated to the study and refinement of terminology.

Identifying the most suitable alternative is a crucial aspect of translation, where the role of linguistic theory remains indispensable. A translator typically strives to find the closest equivalent in the target language to the original text in the source language. Translation, as a discipline, should be the subject of scientific and theoretical inquiry. This involves focusing on the processes of analysis and coordination: determining which aspects of the text require emphasis, identifying essential information, and understanding what elements need attention to achieve the intended goal.

Translation is a multifaceted process that incorporates linguistics, psychology, culture, literature, and other factors. Various aspects of translation can be explored using methodologies from these disciplines. To date, most theoretical studies on translation have been conducted by linguists. The linguistic theory of translation examines the forms of speech communication between speakers of different languages.
