Abstract

The article examines intersemiotic relations within cognitive knowledge structures, which comprise elements of both verbal and non-verbal nature. Drawing on classical models of knowledge representation, the author conceptualizes knowledge as a system of interconnected concepts formed through various channels of experience and represented by linguistic and extralinguistic means. Particular attention is given to the literary text as a space where multiple semiotic systems interact. Using J. D. Salinger’s novella Zooey as material, the study analyzes transitions from the verbal to the visual domain, including theatrical and material codes that contribute to an expanded interpretation of the knowledge structure “Performing Arts.” The analysis demonstrates that intersemiotic transitions serve as an essential mechanism for the actualization of cognitive knowledge structures and facilitate the creation of multilayered artistic meaning.
